Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier is a non-drying, sticky compound that forms a barrier against climbing insects. The timing is critical when using this product; you need to use it in late April to mid-May when the spotted lantern flies (SLFs) are still in their nymph stage. The nymphs will try to climb up the tree during the day and will get caught in the sticky paste. You need to refer to the Penn State guide provided in one of the other comments. This technique will not work once the SLFs become adults and start flying. If you use Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier, you only need a single, simple application on several trees for ant issues. The application is unbelievably sticky, and it does not wash off after the rain. One application on five or six tree trunks, using about 2% of a small, 15 oz. container, will wipe out the problem completely for this year. However, the application is tree-diameter specific. For smoother trunks, you need to apply less, and for rough bark trees, you need more, and you have to get it into the crevices to form a useful barrier. Tree Tanglefoot Insect Barrier can control the following insects: ants, black vine weevil, the cankerworm, gypsy moths, winter moths, and other crawling insects. Nevertheless, it is not specifically designed to control Japanese Beetles.
