Tufan'da anlatılan savaşlar, Polonya-Litvanya Birliği'nin tarihindeki en karmaşık ve en anlamlı çatışmalardır; zira bu savaşlarda devreye giren siyasi saikler, köklerini tarihin erken ve temel olaylarından almaktadır.Cermen Tarikatı'nın (Töton Şövalyeleri) izlediği siyaset, 1655'te İsveç ile Polonya arasında patlak veren savaşta ilk sonuçlarını verdi; çünkü bu siyaset, Prusya'daki elektörü bağımsız hale getirdi ve kısa süre sonra onun oğlu kral olarak taç giydi. 1654'te BüyükRusya ile olan savaşın resmi sebebi, kısmen de olsa, 1612'deki mücadeleden kaynaklanıyordu; o mücadelede Polonyalılar Moskova'yı boyunduruk altına almaya çalışmıştı.
